IMG : GOG on mac games

InsideMacGames provides an interview of GOG about it adding mac versions of old games, that requires licensing agreement from various sources (original editor and/or porting company), or using the great Boxer emulator (derived from DOSBox)

Space Quest Collection (episodes 1 to 6) is available at Steam today at 2,49 euros (75 percent discount). On mac using Crossover may require to launch the setup application first (see here) to switch the video mode before launching the game. We can also copy files from Crossover to Dosbox or ScummVM.

UPDATE : Space Quest 3 is very slow (music and display) from Steam (uses Dosbox 0.61). By switching the default surface display mode (dosbox.conf  file in /Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/CrossOver Games/Bottles/Steam/drive_c/Program Files/Steam/SteamApps/common/Space Quest Collection/dosbox-0.63) to opengl (ok after using Return key) or ddraw display is faster.

However performances are far more greater using boxer, also based on Dosbox (copy sq3 folder from SteamApps/common/Space Quest Collection to the Boxer window). It can also emulate MT32 for music and sounds (requires installing the MT32 rom files in Boxer audio preferences and replacing SNDBLAST.DRV by MT32.DRV in game’s RESOURCE.CFG file).

As supposed, Deus Ex Human Revolution should work with Nvidia 320M as stated by Feral at their Facebook :

Many unsupported cards will run the game, but with a bit of stutter, so we understand that you’d rather see for yourself.
If you meet the other specs, the game will work on that card. The only reason we don’t “officially” support it is that there is still a little bit of stutter, and we want all officially supported machines to have perfect performance.

The game is available through the Mac App Store (39,99 euros, 15 GB).

Feral announced Bioshock 2, due in January (34,95$). The PC version is provided at 9,99 euros (50% discount) on Steam until January, 2. However the Steam version does not work under Crossover.

Feral announced Deus Ex : Human Revolution port on mac. It is expected this winter.

Orange Box PC / activation on mac

Orange Box pack (contains Half Life 2, episodes 1 & 2, Portal and Team Fortress 2) PC version (isn’t available as box for mac) allows to activate the games through Steam on OSX : we have to click to Add Game (or menu Activate a game) from Steam application (not from internet site). Then Steam downloads the files when needed (some of these are different on mac and PC).

Performance using the mac version is finally better on mac mini (and no slowdown after having played one hour, and no over-heating) than with using CrossOver. Rendering quality (water and reflections) is stunning, considering the game was out late 2004.

Half Life 2 is available for mac through Steam. The two extensions (Episode 1 and Episode 2) are also listed. All are provided at 30 percent discount prices (6,29 euros for HL2 and 4,89 for each extension). Settings advices are to disable vertical synchro and colors optimizing, and to perfer anisotropic filter over FFSA.

The mac version of Star Wars The Force Unleashed : Ultimate Sith Edition is in preorder (5$ discount), and will then be available very soon (before late December).

Besides new iMac and the new unibody MacBook, Apple updated the mac Mini, with faster processors (2.26GHz to 2.66GHz), and an NVIDIA GeForce 9400M that now onboards 256 Mb also on the entry model (599$, 2 Gb of ram and still 160 Gb hard drive). The later model (799$) includes 4 Gb of ram (and still 320 Gb of hard drive). The disks still are 5400 rpm, however the mac mini keeps its firewire 800 port.

A new model with Snow Leopard Server and two 500 Gb hard drives (still 5400 rpm) has been added, and is priced 999$ (that is an interesting alternative to XServe).
